Tamale Islamic Senior Science Secondary School (TISSEC), now called Tamale Islamic Science Senior High School, is the only wholly science-based second-cycle school in the northern region of Ghana. Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, provided the funding for establishing the school in early 1989. However, the academic activities of the school officially started in 1997. This was because the then Head of State, Lieutenant Colonel Jerry John Rawlings, took over the school structures to establish the University for Development Studies (UDS) under PNDC Law 279 in 1992.
UDS finally relocated to Nyankpala, paving the way for the school to start. The school started with seventy-six (76) students. Thirty-eight (38) students each for General Science and Agricultural Science. It currently meets the academic needs of 3,410 students in three programs: General Science, Agricultural Science, and Home Economics.
The mission of Tamale Islamic Science SHS is to promote a culture of science education excellence within a caring and secure Islamic faith that is enriched with Islamic moral values. This mission is open to the broader community, staff, and students of different faiths and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The goal of TISSEC is to meet and reach beyond what students and other stakeholders need in terms of quality and standards by being:
1. The best senior high school for teaching Islamic moral and spiritual values through both religious and secular Science in Ghana.
2. An institution that inculcates in its product's academic excellence and a high level of discipline so that it can make important contributions to the country's growth.
Academic values in the school are geared towards a pure and practical scientific inclination coupled with raising a generation of students with a moral upbringing from a religious perspective. This is reflected in the motto: "knowledge, supplication to Allah, and service to mankind".
